29 Things That Make Me Happy: Scented Candles

Day 27...

Scented Candles

I guess this is similar to my love for perfume because really it's just a love for yummy sweet smelling things. The thing with candles though is that they also make a room look really warm and romantic. Just imagine relaxing in a candle lit room with some niiice R&B music playing through your speakers... That's how I spend quite a few of my Saturday nights. Just chilling.

Sneak Peak of my room, these are some of the candles I have in there. Can't wait to show you guys the complete transformation!
I have quite a few home scents minus the candles because my mum keeps warning me that my candles are a fire hazard *side eye*. My favourite scents are usually quite fruity and sweet and I also love the smell of clean linen. Smells like a fresh new beginning!

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Writing A New Short Story!

Day 26...

Thought Relieving Stories

So that's a bit of a weird thing to make me happy but basically what I actually mean is that some nights when I can't sleep and my brain refuses to shut down because I'm an over analyser and I over think even the most minute details of life,  I write a super short story to just get all the thoughts out. Writing has always been an excellent form of relief for me and those sleepless nights are definitely no different.

The most recent one was me thinking about all the weddings I had been to recently, my friend's sister's one "All Shades of Pink" and my cousins one, "Engagement Tales and Wedding Bells". I'm always wondering what' going through the bride and groom's heads as they repeat their wedding vows at the altar and so I wrote something based on this. I literally wrote this in about 30 minutes so I know it's not the best work ever but I hope you enjoy it for what it is. I've called it "Wedding Bells"

This picture is by British fashion illustrator Hayden Williams from his Bridal Couture 2014 collection. He has actually been a source of inspiration for another of my short stories. I really love the simplicity and elegance of the dress.
She stood at the doors of the cathedral, her white dress perfectly fitted to flatter her every curve and conceal her every imperfection. She could hear the sound of the organ playing the wedding march, a tune she had hummed in her head over a million times before today, counting her steps to make sure she and her father reached the altar just in time for the grand finale of the tune. The doors were flung wide open and the room fell silent, all eyes in the room were fixed on her and her alone, she could feel her body jitter with every step and she leaned on her dad for support. Right at the end of the long aisle, beautifully decorated with white roses and petals, was the love of her life, her one and only Jimi. From where she stood she could see his chest heaving ever so slightly under his shiny black tuxedo, he was trying to calm his breathing and when she finally got to the altar, she imitated the rise and fall of his chest, breath for breath, heart for heart, life for life.

A lot of what the priest was saying was going over Sade’s head, she just really wanted to be declared the wife of this her perfect man and finally be known as Mrs Odusote. So when finally it got to the exchange of vows, she found her mind unusually cluttered as Jimi began to recite the traditional vows after the priest. She closed her eyes and tried to allow herself to truly exist in this moment.

“With this ring, I thee wed…”

She thought of all the times that she had thought Jimi was going to propose to her. They had been dating for 10 years and so many surprise dinners and unsuspected gestures of romance had turned out to be mini disappointments for Sade. With each disappointment she resolved in her mind that the next one would be the last and then she would have to ask him plainly. The worst one was at a hastily thrown together surprise party for her mum’s 53rd birthday, her whole family was acting so suspicious that she was sure that would be the day. It turned out that instead her younger brother didn’t know how to tell the family he was leaving Lagos permanently for work and he and Jimi had orchestrated dinner as a way to break the news. When the proposal finally came though, she hadn’t suspected it at all. She was lying in bed one Sunday afternoon when Jimi appeared at her home and started babbling on about love and patience and taking your time to do things the best way possible. It wasn’t until his voice gave him away, revealing a bit too much emotion and she looked into his tear filled brown eyes that she realised exactly what was happening. He got down on both knees and presented the most beautiful canary yellow diamond ring with an engraving of their initials on the inside of the band and she said “Yes!”

“…With my body, I thee honour…”

Sex before marriage, infidelity and even abortion, the body was something that they both never gave much importance to. Sade hadn’t meant to cheat on him that night but they were on one of their breaks and she thought she needed the confidence boost from being able to successfully flirt with another man after 6 years of a relationship. She didn’t think it would lead to anything until she felt his lips on hers and her resolve too weak to stop him. She carried the kiss like a black cloud over her head for months before finally telling Jimi about it. His forgiveness had not come easy and it was only on the intervention of her best friend that he even decided to listen to her story. Jimi was not free of all blame though and every time she thinks of the abortion she never wanted of the child he wasn’t ready for, she cannot help but feel a little betrayed and so she pushes the thought out of her mind. This is their happy day and they had both gone through the necessary absolution and paid penance for their sins.

“…And all my wordly goods with thee I share…”

Forget about the wordly goods, to Sade there was nothing in this world that could ever come close to the feelings of love, companionship, freedom and clarity that she felt with Jimi. As a man he was imperfect as all human beings were but as her partner, he was the best version of himself and she of herself. At the end of the day it was never the possession of wordly goods that mattered, she felt extremely lucky to be with him and knew he felt the same about her. The fact that her father-in-law had a nice little apartment with their names on it surely helped matters though.

“In the name of the Father, and of the Son and and of the Holy Spirit…”

Even through their dark days and stormy nights, when the rains never seemed to desist, they held on tightly to each other and in the later years to God. Through falling in love with each other, they had both realised the need to fall in love with God first, to live a life mimicking that of Jesus. To be fully reliant on the Holy Spirit to guide them and order their footsteps. They became one with God and now on this day the 12th of September 2014, they will become one in front of God.

“Amen.”

She opened her eyes against the tears that were threatening to fall and ruin her make-up before the photos and blinked frantically. It has finally happened, they were now officially Mr and Mrs. and even though she didn’t make it down the altar according to her precise counts, it didn’t matter because Jimi was finally all hers. Through the ups and downs, the highs and the lows. She was his and he was hers.

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Stats

Day 25...

Stats

So I've had some really decent views this month and even though it's nothing compared to the 10,000+ a month that most bloggers are used to I'm really proud of myself for getting my highest number of page views ever this month. It really goes to show that consistency and quality are actually key to being successful not only in blogging but in life.

My stats are so up and down, much like my blogging style I suppose but from now I want to keep that peak rising... No more highs and lows, onwards and upwards only! I'm actually really excited to be recommitted to this journey and can't wait to reap the results. Lord knows I can't do it without you darling people that actually come online and think to read the blog though and so I'm eternally grateful to all of you.

If you promise not to leave me, I will promise to keep the content rolling! :D

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Coco

So the whole weekend zipped on by without me releasing a single post on "Things That Make Me Happy" and so I'm now several days behind *crying face*. Also my office blocked all social media isn sites and so I couldn't spend my lunch hour happily blogging away like I had been doing for the last 2 weeks.

Anyways... I'm going to release as many "Things That Make Me Happy" posts as I can today because I really wanted to be done today, the last day of the month.

Day 24....

Coco

Today's thing that makes me happy is this cute little Yorkshire terrier, Coco. She's my aunt's dog who lives in Lagos with my grandparents even though my aunt lives in London. Lol. Complicated story. I begged and begged for my parents to let me have her while my aunt was away but apparently there's a no dogs policy where I live. I think that's just an excuse! Coco is the sweetest little thing and she looks sooo cute when she's running about the place, chasing chickens and trying to play with stray cats (ew). I don't usually like dogs at all but Coco and my friends dog Azlan are my faves!

I didn't even get mad when Coco licked my ear to make me wake up from my nap or when she more critically made me smash my iPhone screen because I was running about with her. She's only about 6 months old now, isn't she adorbs?

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Travelling

Day 23...

Travelling

So I'm sure if you're a regular reader you know that I went on holiday with my family last month and there's still so much I haven't been able to share with you guys yet! I never even got round to covering Palm Springs but to be honest I spent most of the week in Palm Springs just lounging about and being on "actual" relaxing holiday. It was soo beautiful though and I can't just not share pictures with you lovelies at all! So here are a couple of pictures from my time there.

Palm Springs is a real golfer's paradise with over 150 courses to choose from and some of the courses are intwined in resorts.

Mini artificial waterfall.

The area of Palm Springs we were in was very very mountainous and actually also contains the famous San Andreas fault which is the cause for a large number of the earthquakes that hit California. Check out this vista with the umbrellas, palm trees and the mountains, doesn't it just look gorge??

Flamingos!! Does anyone know why they always have one leg up when they
We stayed at the Marriott Desert Springs Villas by the way, before I forget to mention!

There's nothing quite like getting away from your usual hustle and bustle life and just having moments to yourself.

I really want to go to Florence before the end of the year now but who knows if that's really going to happen. I'm going to keep my fingers crossed for now and wish upon the stars!

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Beaches

Day 22

Beaches

Am I the only one that loves being around water and sand and sun? I know I definitely can't be... There's just something so serene about watching the waves crash into the land and then retreat again and repeat. For me whenever I'm on some form of boat there's a tranquility that overrides everything else, watching the water flow and feeling so small around the deep blue sea is extremely grounding for me.

I was at the beach last weekend, extended birthday celebrations and things and to be honest I didn't take too many pictures because... well you know... I just didn't. Lol. Here's a few I did manage though.

Doing the "Khaleesi Trek" from the jetty to the beach house

Poolside of the beach house- ain't it pretty?

Possibly the only good full length shot of me!

Let's go on an adventure! Follow me...
I hope you guys would forgive my tardiness over the last few days!

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Music II

Day 21...

Music

I know that technically this is a repeat from the day before but I didn't feel like I really did my love of music justice at that time. I was in a mood when I wrote that super short post and I did it mainly out of an obligation to 'fulfil all righteousness' than anything else. I don't want to be that type of blogger but I also always want to be real with you guys. Life is not always bright and chipper and full of love and laughter. There's always good days and bad days.

Well listening to music that evening helped me blow my dark clouds away and make way for some rays of sunlight even though the clouds in Lagos are just refusing to let any sun come through. Recently I've been listening to different music than I usually do, I've discovered some really cool South African indie tunes and some other R&B tunes outside the usual suspects.

Here's a couple of songs I've been listening to recently.

Pluto (Remember You)- DJ Clock ft Beatenburg

Easy to Love- Bucie ft Heavy K

Can't Raise A Man- K. Michelle

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Music

Day 20...

Music

So this is coming late. I apologise. If I'm perfectly honest I'm not really in the mood to think of something that makes me happy today. I have so many conflicting thoughts in my head and my heart feels heavy and I feel slightly lost. There's only one thing that truly takes my mind off everything and that's music. So I'm going to have a late night jam session to all my favourite songs!

I'm sure I'd be all cheered up and chipper by the time I'm done!

... Now putting iTunes on shuffle...

Wedding Bells: "All Shades of Pink"

Hey guys, how you doing? Look, it's another post about a wedding! If you live in Lagos you know that there's at one wedding every single weekend that you could attend and so I'm sure you're not surprised that I've been to another one recently! I don't make it a habit of going to weddings where I don't know the couple though, what's the point? It's someone's special day, why be there when I know I really couldn't care less. As sweet as party rice is, is it ever that deep?

Warning: This post is quite picture heavy.

This wedding was the elder sister of one of my best friend's, Tomi. Remember her from Salford and Solita? It was on a Saturday and at drinks on Friday night, I was told I shouldn't dare trying to do my make-up myself *sigh* so I grudgingly got up early in the morning to head to hers and get my make up done professionally. The make-up artists wasn't my all time favourite EEDA this time but another girl called Sara, she seemed very nervous and inexperienced at first but she ended up doing a great job. Here's the only close up I took before I got dressed, it was more out of boredom and waiting than anything else.

I really like that she got my natural eyebrow shape.
The wedding colours were "all shades of pink" and so I opted for this dress from Monsoon that I wore to my mum's 50th a while ago. I didn't get dressed alone though and although the whole house was a complete madhouse with no less than twenty girls getting ready, we all managed to make it out alive and looking fabulous no less. By the time we were all ready we were about 3 hours behind schedule but of course we had to take pictures before we left!

The dress was slightly too big and that made me SO happy, bootcamp has been paying off! Lol
Starring Jen as "The Lady in Red".
Ayo looking flawless in orange!
I love how we all ended up wearing really bold solid colours, it was completely unplanned but really made all the pictures look so bright and colourful!

As the bride came down the stairs I tried to steal a quick snap of her and Tomi who was missing all the photo fun because she had to play the role of Chief Brides slave maid. You can already tell that they both look fab can't you?

I got a slightly better picture of the bride when she was posing with all her adoring bridesmaids. Don't you just love her dress?

The dress and veil were just to die for and I loved that she wore her hair half up, half down not the usual intricate bun that you see. It just made it feel more fun and more 'her'.

I took one last selfie before we all swooped into cars and rode to the venue which was the Grand Ballroom in Oriental Hotel.
You can see the jewellery a little more clearly here
The venue for the Civil Ceremony was beautifully decorated, Oriental is generally a very grand hotel and the decorators played with that and really made everywhere come alive.

I got in a cheeky shot of Tomi when she was finally standing still for more than 30 seconds!

The ceremony was very brief and included the signing of the marriage registry and lighting of unity candles by members of both families and afterwards we were ushered downstairs to the ballroom to be seated and were greeted by this lady whose skirt was giving out champagne! Haha. Rose of course, to keep to theme pink theme.

I know it's blurry but I just couldn't leave it out. I LOVED this idea.
When I walked into the ballroom I was gobsmacked! Like literally had the wind taken out of me by how beautiful it all was but not only that, it looked like the wedding of my dreams! Haha. Whoever knows me knows that pink is my favourite colour but when I want to avoid looking too girly I default to purple. The hall was a pink lover's heaven AND she had incorporated two of my favourite things, candles and butterflies!
The bride and grooms seat for the day. Ignore the pink tutu please..
Some of the centre pieces...

tea lights always add a touch of romance to the room.
A 'sweets' table which literally had everything from candy floss to peppermints to maoms all in pink of course!

But my favourite part of the decor had to be this elevated aisle right in the middle leading up to were the bride and groom were seated. With well over a thousand guests, it divided the room nicely into the agbalagbas and the young ones as well as made sure that whenever the bride and groom were on the move, they were the centre of attention.

Who said the groom can't be funky on the day and still look classy? #redbottoms
After a whole lot of eating and even more dancing and drinking, we defaulted to doing what we do best, taking pictures!
Finally you get to see the full length of Tomi's dress and all the details, isn't it beautiful? She looked so amazing I could cry for joy! Lol. Needless to say, A LOT of people mistook her for the bride.

Tomi and her very good friend, Lila who flew in from Hungary to be here for the wedding.
Tomizzle and I!

Jen, who flew in from London, and I!
Dee and I!

Ayo and I
At the end out of all the things I got to take home that day and the million and one ideas I have for my own wedding now, I was most excited about my sweets box!

Wishing Ronke and Bode a happy and fulfilled married life, God bless your union.
