Exploring Wales: The Llyn Peninsula

So it's been a while since I did one of my "Exploring England" posts... Partly because I haven't really been in England very long and when I'm here in London the weather is just not compelling me to step outside the comfort of my four walls to explore! But alas, I found a reason... My really good friend Koki needed someone to go with her to explore the Welsh coast as part of her site analysis. She does architecture you see so we usually go on these fun trips together. Remember the beautiful sunrise on Barry Island? Yeah that was with her too.

I guess it'd be incorrect to call this post Exploring England then because this time we were in Wales, the Llyn Peninsula to be precise! We set off from London on what was possibly the longest journey I've ever made within the U.K. Our exact destination? I little village near Abersoch, North Wales. The journey doesn't usually have to take such a long time but with the train tracks being completely wrecked by the rains and flooding, ours was an 8-9 hour journey! Nothing is too long with the company of a good friend to chat to and some music to keep you going and eventually we arrived at the long winding hilly roads of Abersoch.

The next morning was our exploration day and the original plan was to walk as much as the pilgrims trail from one end of the peninsula to the other. Going from Abersoch to Aberdaron. It's about 80 miles long or something crazy if I remember correctly so there was no way we were going to complete it in one day. What started off as tidy but windy roads soon evolved to muddy sticky paths but the initial 45 minute walk to the coast was well worth it!

We arrived at Hell's Mouth (Porth Neigwl), a popular destination for surfers and thought we might walk the Llyn coastal path from there. I'm not sure if you can tell from the picture below but the tide was nowhere near far out enough for us to even dream of walking along the beach to far down and so we had to abort the mission, it seems the tour guide we spoke to before starting our walk didn't know as much about the tide times as we'd hoped and neither of us fancied challenging the currents of the sea!

Luckily for us, it was during the school run hours and we managed to stop a guy taking his kids to school to ask him for directions to Aberdaron. He kind of looked at us like we were a bit crazy and pointed us to "a mate of his who has a taxi". You see, I put that in quote because being a city girl I would rather walk the entire length of my journey than walk up the road to a strangers house and ask him if he's "the mate with the taxi". It just sounds like something out of a horror movie, it really does. But alas, we weren't in a city and with nothing but farms around us and no phone signal we had little choice but to venture to "the house with the taxi man".

It turned out to actually be just a guy with his taxi and he was quite happy to take us through the scenic route to Abedaron which meant we stopped loads and took tons of pictures of the views. You can actually see a really prominent part of the peninsula and the coast looked so beautiful! It really was one of those "had-to-be-there" moments because unfortunately I only had my iPhone camera with me to try and capture the beautiful landscape. I think it did an alright job though.

We eventually got to Aberdaron and were greeted by a pretty empty beach and dead town. Apart from the weather not really being decent enough for anyone but the hardcore surfers to be on the beach the whole town is also very seasonal with all their shops and coffee houses opening up much later in the year. It was nice to go when it was quiet though because it felt like we had the whole world to ourselves sometimes. We even saw the chapel that the famous poet R.S Thomas used to preach at right by the coast.

We played on the beach for sometimes, skipping across little rivers and finding all sorts of really interesting rocks before we decided that it would be best not to get carried away and attempt to finish the rest of the trail from where we were. Especially as we had just taxi'd it all the way from one end to the other, essentially cheating!

We climbed till we reached the highest point we could get to without feeling like we were about to drop right off the cliff and into the waters below and on the way up we found the remains of a Roman/Celtic house or something.
Welcome to my humble abode!
And right there from the top we had a perfect view of the two islands Ynys Gwylan-fawr and Ynys Gwylan-bach, that marked the end of the pilgrims trail, there used to be a monastery there where they would all congregate at the end of the walk! Please don't ask me how to pronounce those, I spent the whole trip asking different locals how to make the elusive "ll" sound as in "Pwhelli". Apparently you raise the sides of your tongue to the roof of your mouth and blow out... So much more difficult than it sounds!!

Finding the two islands was definitely exciting until we saw these stairs waiting for us to make our descent back towards the beach and the sleepy town of Aberdaron. You see, I'm not exactly scared of heights but I definitely don't like them. This was definitely one of the worst parts of the walk for me, I kept imagining myself slipping and rolling all the way down to the end. Morbid I know. Luckily that never happened.

By the end of this walk it's safe to say we had worked up a decent sized appetite and so we headed to the only open pub and got ourselves some free dinner before heading back by bus to the even more quiet village of Abersoch.

The next day we were up before the sun had a chance to rise fully and commenced our journey back through the farms and trees and all the way to the high rises of London town.

My favourite picture from the trip? Definitely this one! I love all the purple and plum in the picture and couldn't resist taking some of the stones home with me. I'm really considering putting this picture into the blog banner but we'd see what happens...

Whoosh! That was a long post, it feels good to be back to writing again! Hope you enjoyed it guys. See you soon!

Revolucion de Cuba: Tapas and Latin Music

So it's been a while since I did a foodie post! Actually I don't think I've done one this year! *insert horrified face*. As a self-proclaimed foodie, this needed to be rectified immediately! Lucky for me (and you!) I've been to a couple of new places this year and remembered to take pictures. This post is on Revolucion de Cuba in Manchester, I went with A on a random night last month. Initially I wasn't too keen on it because I really wanted to have a world famous "Almost Famous" burger but as usual their waiting time for a table was phenomenal! Probably over an hour long, as much as I like Almost Famous there's just something about waiting an hour for a table that really annoys me. At least they've removed their pretentious bouncer from the door since they relocated to Deasngate I believe.

We were seated and promptly ordered drinks, I can't even lie, at this point I was a bit disappointed because the menu said my drink came in a real pineapple and instead it came in this...

I mean... the cheek of it. The thought of drinking from a real pineapple was more than half the reason I picked that drink instead of a yummy margarita! After that let down I was feeling a little more than disappointed with the place already. I hate being tricked! Turns out I had nothing to fear, you see.. at Revolucion de Cuba there's a very entertaining live band that comes to play in the evenings and seeing as we were completely unaware of this at the time, it came as a pleasant and very welcome surprise. The band of two men and one woman sang all sorts of Latin American/Spanish hit songs that I know by tune only. I just tried to type out the tune but it just looked a bit spastic! They did perform "Konga" though! Which was my favourite part of the night and the song promptly got stuck in my head! Saying all this though, if you're looking for a quiet place to eat in peace this is not for you. The "after-work" crowd in there is huge, making it a little noisy at certain times.

By the time our tapas came I was more than happy again and ready to get into it. Oh I apologise, all these pictures were taken on my phone camera, however I don't think they look half bad! We ordered six small plates to share, (going clockwise from the top left corner); Gambas Pil Pil, Pork belly Skewers, Pulled Pork Taquito, Sweet Potato and Chorizo Croquettes, Chicken Rumba Skewers and Chicken and Roasted Peppers Quesadillas. Oh and some crusty bread on the side for dipping!

By the time we were done with the tapas and the crusty bread I was pretty full but A insisted on getting our favourite ones again! Out of the six, the winners were...

Gambas Pil Pil: My own personal favourite. I love seafood tbh, nothing more can be said. Any form of seafood is most likely to win with me and the garlic and butter sauce was just divine!

The Chicken Quesadillas: A joint favourite! The tortilla and the cheese alongside the chicken just melt in your mouth. Best eaten very warm! My belly is rumbling just thinking about it.

Chicken Rumba Skewers: These yummy skewers were marinated in lime, soy and pineapple and grilled to succulent perfection!

To be perfectly honest, by the time we were done with the three extra plates we were both waaaay too full to move! But what's some extra tapas without a margarita to accompany it?? They do a lot of rum based cocktails and their margarita was really nice! The right blend of sweetness with the kick of alcohol just noticeable enough but not too strong.

By the end of the whole ordeal, we were presented with this lovely box of "Cuban cigars". We "smoked" our cigars, closed the box and salsa'd out of Revolucion de Cuba. I'd definitely be going back there again in a hurry.

Here's my rating for Revolucion de Cuba!
Food: 7/10
Drinks: 6.5/10
Ambience: 7.5/10
Service: 8/10

Adios! Have a lovely weekend!

Read with Reni: Bloggers Book Club, Re-Introductions

*Pinch, punch, first of the month* to all of you my lovely readers! I hope January was an amazing start to the year for you and it's set the tone for the rest of the months ahead. If you remember, I very randomly decided to start an online bloggers book club "Read With Reni" but I didn't really put much thought into the structure of it at the time. Partly because I was having a "Eureka!" moment and didn't want to ruin it by overthinking things! Haha. So anyways, now I've had the chance to sit down and think about how I'd like things to go this year so here we are, formally re-introducing "Read with Reni" with all the bits and bobs attached!

What is it?
Well, it's simple really, it's an online book club open to any and everybody that like me, sometimes just wants to get lost in the pages of a great book. We'd be reading one book a month and on the first of every month, I'd put up a review of sorts of the previous month's book. I say "of sorts" because personally, I hate spoilers! My review might be in the form of a short story the book inspired me to write, or some part of the book that really struck a chord with me. It would not always be a structured typical review so I promise it would have as little spoilers as possible, for the sake of the people who might not have finished reading it yet.

What do you have to do?
Absolutely nothing! Well except read of course, and that itself is optional. There's no pressure to join and nothing to subscribe to. If you've read a particular book and want to share a review on your own blog then that's great! I'd have an open link-up at the end of each of my reviews so we can all share our thoughts! And if of course you don't have a blog, you can drop as many comments as you want. I'd always be there for related discussions etc.

When do we start?
NOW! It's a little impromptu but why wait another day? We've already missed January!

And possibly the most important question...
What shall we be reading?
I'm going to try and make the choices as mixed and diverse as possible, reason being I really want to widen my horizons. It would mostly be a mix of classic, modern and african literature and I'd announce the books at the beginning of every quarter of the year. There would be three 'Readers Choice' months in April, August and December where readers get to decide through a poll what books they would like to read that month. More info on that later.

The books for this first quarter are
February: And the Mountains Echoed- Khaled Hosseini
March: Gone Girl- Gillian Flynn
April: Readers Choice- TBC

I hope you guys are as excited as I am for this to get properly underway. I can't wait to get tucked in to Khaled Hosseini's amazing writing this month. If you would like to suggest a book to be in the poll for the "Readers Choice" months feel free to drop a comment or send me an email at lilactintedviews[at]yahoo[dot]com.

Hope you have a lovely weekend and an even better month!
