29 Things That Make Me Happy: Reading

Day 16...

Reading

So before I get started let me just apologise for the delay in this post. Had I known that the after math of my birthday would have been so great I would have scheduled this post on Monday too. Truthfully I'm a little bit under the weather but nothing that can't be managed and handled. Today's "Thing That Makes Me Happy" is reading... Especially on rainy days where I just want to lay down and rest, reading is like the perfect form of escapism for me. From novels to journals to blogs, I can spend hours reading and have been known to finish some pretty massive books in days if not hours. Once I bought a Harry Potter book at the airporty (Order of the Pheonix I think) to take on a family holiday to Portugal from London. I started it at the airport and was over 3/4's through before we arrived at the villa! Lol

I also started a "Read with Reni" monthly on this blog which I was convinced no one ever read until one of you lovely readers, Tunrayo, told me about some books she was reading which had been featured there. Just goes to show that if you love doing something you shouldn't ever stop.

Here's a couple of my "Read with Reni" book reviews..

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Inspirational Quotes

Day 14...

Inspirational Quotes

So I played hookey from work today because I've been feeling a little under the weather, I don't really know how to describe what's wrong I just knew staying in the office was not helping so after coming home and having a good old snooze I now find myself feeling rather pensive. You see, today is the eve of my twenty third birthday and for me, my birthday resolutions are always greater than my New Year's ones. Growing up is such a journey and sometimes it's easy to compare yourself to other people and think "But if Lagbaja has this, why can't I have it too?" The truth is, there is no reason why we all can't have what we want in life, through prayer, consistency and hardwork, I truly believe that there is nothing I cannot have or do.

Whenever I find myself feeling a little bleak and a little blue I pull out my phone and look through the motivational and inspirational quotes I've gotten from around the web and just remind myself to keep working hard for what I want, pushing myself wholeheartedly and making sure I do it everyday.

What are some of your favourite quotes?
I hope these inspire you as much as they inspire me... Have a blessed day everyone x

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Old School Movies

Day 13...

Old School Movies

Let me start by saying that to me, anything that came out before I was born is old school! I remember this particular obsession started when my now ex (sad face) and I spent one valentines day indoors with pizza, wine and those massive Millie's Cookies celebration cookies and just watched movie after movie.

What's weird is that on a normal day I don't really watch that much TV and film in general but for some reason that day I was hooked, blame it on the occasion. That night we watched "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" which was amazing! "The Breakfast Club" which left us thinking "huh :/" but in a good way and one more I don't remember now.

My all time favourite oldies though must be "Pretty Woman" with Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, imagine how excited I was going down Rodeo Drive in L.A and passing shops and hotels that had been used in the movie!
julia roberts, richard gere

"Dirty Dancing" with Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze
jennifer grey, patrick swayze

and "Love and Basketball" with Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps which isn't really old school but I just love it!
sana lathan, omar epps

I could honestly watch those over and over again and never get tired.

Next up on my list to see is "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"with Marilyn Monroe and "Breakfast at Tiffany's" with Audrey Hepburn, the truly old school stuff. But first how about "Half of a Yellow Sun" to round up a weekend well spent, I've been dying to see it.

What old school movies do you guys just love?

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Chris Brown

Day 11...

The fact that Chris Brown is inadvertently counting down to my birthday

Haha. I'm not a huge fan of the artiste and yes it's because he beat up my Bajan Queen but to be honest, he has an amazing talent for singing and dancing as well and I do like a lot of his R&B and Pop type music. Anyways as you may know, his new album "X" is to be released next Tuesday which also happens to be my birthday and so seeing him count down the number of days makes me feel special for some reason.

That doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to buy the album though... But let's see... Also I just found out that Dominos is having a "Reni Appreciation Day" by having a buy one get one free promo on all pizzas, all day in all restaurants. Well in Lagos at least. Oh did I say Reni Appreciation Day? I meant Customer. Lol. Call them on 08135343310 if you're interested. Sharing is caring you know.

Little details like this actually make me feel more special for some reason, call me an odd bug if you wish :D

Does anyone have any little things that make them more happy than they should? Share with me in the comments box.

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Manchester

Day 10...

Manchester!

Is it weird to list a place I no longer live in as something that makes me happy? I think not. The city held so much for me, I learnt about who I am, I fell in love, I felt regret and disappointment, I made some of the best friends in the world and I started this blog! Truly it was probably the most formative 4 years of my life!

Cycling to Salford Quays :)
Here's a list of 20 things to remember that a fellow Mancunian, Dee, wrote to her sister starting University there, I think it's pretty apt so I wanted to share it (with her permission of course) with not only people going to Manchester but to all the people starting university this year.

1. Do attend ALL your lectures, tutorials and labs, if you can. You can fool yourself into saying ‘yeahh, I can learn this stuff on my own and read the power-point slides’ but it will take longer that way. Be engaged and AWAKE.
2. On that note, wake up early enough. Don’t stumble into lecture halls bleary-eyed at 9.01am, the way I did for the first couple of years.
3. Don’t be a lone ranger. Make full use of tutorials or Problem-Based Learning to solve questions as a group, you get more perspective that way.
4. I’m not sure about civil engineering exams, but for mine, most never really follow past paper’s format so do take the time to understand deeply the theory behind it and have it at your fingertips especially when the time constraint is very, very tight. Move away from SPM mentality where it’s about working the format.
Social:
5. This is the time to try what you like and get out of your comfort zone! Fencing, Frisbee, hockey, lacrosse etc. You mention you’re not good at team sports. I do recommend trying for at least a semester just to challenge yourself. You might surprise yourself.
6. The University of Manchester’s orchestra is active and put on pretty damn good performances so you could think about joining that. Don’t be like me, where I’ve lost a lot of my saxophone and piano skills.
7. Get to know as many people from different backgrounds, cultures and countries as you can. It doesn’t mean that you lose your Malay roots when you mix around (provided you always remember where you’re from). There’s a lot of value in finding out different mentalities and psyches – keep an open mind and be tolerant.
8. The volunteering scene is very active in Manchester! But do choose well and don’t do it just because.
Food:
9. There will be A LOT of temptations. Do enjoy the occasional kebab and chip naan but don’t make the take-outs a permanent fixture in your diet. I gained 12kg in my first year and took three years to properly lose them.
10. Keep a look-out for promotions/sale, especially in Asda. I really enjoyed my smoked salmon and blueberries at cut-prices
11. Sainsbury’s or Boots at the train station is great for grabbing a quick, sandwich lunch. On that note, don’t be chained to the desktop/laptop, dropping crumbs of my lunch on the keyboard the way I was in 3rd year or 4th year. I realized it’s not really that efficient to work that long.
12. Do cook, even if it’s as simple as scrambled eggs or beans on toast, your body and brain will thank you for it. For the first three years where I lived on microwaved food and briyani, my brain was sluggish as hell.

Traveling:
13. You’re so close to Europe! Do try and travel when you can but do plan early to catch the cheap flights.
14. When you travel, learn as much as you can, engage with the mood and the vibe of the place – don’t be a plastic tourist. Find out what’s the lifeblood of that country, the history and culture but HAVE FUN.
15. Stay safe and hone your instincts. Don’t be so blur. Traveling isn’t as dangerous as what our parents make it out to be but be sensible. This is your chance to develop your street-smarts outside the safe boundaries of your hometown/boarding school. Make the most out of it.
16. Central Europe’s cheaper and more interesting than Western Europe.

Miscellaneous:
17. Get a Uni-rider even though you live close to the campus. It’s worth it, especially if you want to make the trip past Fallowfield to go to this Malaysian restaurant.
18. SALE ON ZARA AND FRENCH CONNECTION
19. Book train tickets early, Virgin trains is really good.
20. Make the most out of your university experience, this is a golden
opportunity. Don’t be scared to make your own mistakes and stumble, because believe me, you will come back from it even better to move forward especially when you come home with a little bit more wisdom to serve your country. Be true to yourself

Reading this made me SO nostalgic, I know a lot of it is specific to her and her family but just replace whatever you need to to make it personal to you, there's A LOT to learn from it.

I miss Manch so much! *sobs* but I happy for change and progress is my life... Plus "I'd always have Manchester".

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Summer and Autumn

Day 8...

The seasons of the year

Especially Summer and Autumn! For me, Winter is just too cold, I've spent most of my life in weather that permanently stays above 25 degrees C, there was just no getting used to anything less than about 12 degrees. And although Spring is lovely because all the flowers bloom again, it just doesn't hold the same magic for me as Autumn.

Summer is filled with days at the beach, on beautiful holiday resorts, skimpy clothing, cool sunglasses, sandals, laughter, cocktails (Can someone say "yes" to a nice glass of Pimms?) and just generally feeling sun-kissed and alive. Also don't you find that good weather really brings out the best in people? Everyone just seems happier and lighter and free!

And of course, as a September baby I was born in the beauty of the orange trees, I love watching the leaves change colour on the trees, you get such lovely shades of yellows, oranges, reds and browns and Autumn always comes just in time, when you're getting a little bit too tanned and are just starting to tire of mini dresses and short shorts.
One of the most perfect Autumn trees ever, found in York when I went to visit my brother in mid-October.
After moving to Nigeria I think I'd miss the seasons a lot actually, we only have 2 here, rainy season which lasts from about April till October and dry season which takes up the rest of the year from November till March. I'm not yet sure which one I prefer because I haven't really experienced the dry season since I moved back so I'm in a neutral space right now.

What's your favourite season of the year?

29 Things That Make Me Happy: My Family

Day 5

My Beautiful Amazing Family

Honestly they say that you can't choose your family but I'm happy that God chose mine for me. I'm literally surrounded with the BEST people 24/7. Spending 2 weeks in a confined space with my nuclear family really made me appreciate them all the more, especially as at this point we are very rarely ever all together. And by family I don't just mean my parents and my brothers, I'm talking the whole damn team! I've been blessed to have such a close relationship with not just my siblings but also my cousins and second cousins too. There are even some family friends that I was sure were related to us!

Every single day I thank God for the gift of kinship that he has blessed us with and I pray that as generations to pass, our bond will always grow stronger. I literally love these guys with all my heart. The best support system ever.

I actually intended to stop this post at the last full stop but I feel such an outpouring of love and emotion right now, it didn't feel right to just cut it short. I'm just sitting here thinking of all the good, bad and ugly times we've gone through as a unit, there's no better feeling in this world than knowing that whatever problems you have are not yours alone. I get a lot of support from friends as well but there's truly something special about being connected to the people that we are bound to by blood and marriage.

If I could put up pictures of every one I was talking about this would become SUPER long! But they know who they are :)

Infact this whole thing has made me want to plan a family reunion! Christmas perhaps? Haha.

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Teddies!

Day 4

My teddies!

Lol, I know... I'm a big baby, the funny thing about today is that I really wasn't going to put this up, I was kinda shy, but you know.. Seeing as I share quite a significant portion of my life on this blog I figured I might as well keep oversharing!

9 out of 10 nights or should I say something like 6 out of 7 nights a week, I will be falling asleep with a teddy in my arms.

Oh P.S. This isn't even the whole family! Haha. These are just the little guys!

29 Things That Make Me Happy: Writing

Day 3...

Writing!

I know it's probably a little bit cliche for a blogger to list writing as something that makes them happy but it's just the truth. By writing I mostly mean creative writing, short stories, attempts at poetry and the like. I also have a million story ideas in my head but sometimes finding the time to write them all down into coherent well thought out pieces of literature is too big a task for my work filled days.

I got this book from paperchase before I moved back and it's filled with all sorts of story ideas and even some short stories, sometimes I like to get pen to paper instead of typing all the time. Sadly I also take it to work so it's also filled with lots of random engineering stuff!

Here's some of my most popular and favourite pieces of written work by me, in no particular order:
